How to Use Equaide
Equaide is a simple and effective product to use. Each pot is supplied with a mixing stick and application brush.
When opening your pot of Equaide, please take care not to spill it. The product will require mixing before use, as it naturally separates during storage, with the liquid sitting on top and the thicker material settling at the bottom.
Equaide should be thoroughly mixed until there are no lumps remaining. This can take several minutes, so please take your time to ensure it is fully mixed before application.
Preparing the wound
Before applying Equaide, first clean the wound using saline solution or fresh water.
Once cleaned, dry the area thoroughly. Swabs are ideal as they are less likely to stick to the wound.
Apply a thin layer of Equaide to the affected area. A thicker layer is not necessary and will only result in using more product than required.
If the wound is actively bleeding, a pressure bandage may be required. If you are inexperienced with bandaging or have any concerns regarding the wound, we always recommend consulting your vet.
Ongoing management of the wound
This process of clean, dry, and reapply should be repeated daily until Equaide gets on top of the wound, at which point application can usually be reduced to every other day.
If proud flesh is present, daily cleaning, drying, and reapplication should continue.
Trust the process — Equaide works. However, if you have any questions or are unsure about anything during treatment, please get in touch. We are always more than happy to help.
Equaide can be used on all types of wounds and skin disorders.
Equaide can be used from the very beginning of wound treatment. If an infection is present, or there is concern that one may develop, we always recommend that the horse is assessed and treated appropriately by a vet. Please consult your vet if you believe an infection may be present.
It is never too late to start using Equaide on a wound.
We recommend using Equaide from the beginning of treatment as it helps prevent proud flesh from forming. If proud flesh is already present, Equaide works to dissolve the excess tissue back to a healthy skin cell level.
Equaide can also be used on wounds with stitches or staples and may be used either with or without bandaging, depending on the wound and its location.
We Are Here to Help
We are always here to help and offer advice on using Equaide.
We have over 15 years of experience using Equaide on many different types of wounds and skin disorders on our own horses, prior to becoming a UK distributor in 2018.
You can call or WhatsApp images to us on 07743 862242 or email us at sales@stirlingandcentral.co.uk.
Seeing photographs of the wound you are working with is always helpful, as it allows us to provide more specific advice and guidance based on the individual case.
Equaide is made from activated charcoal and a blend of minerals in a water-based solution.
NO alcohol, NO DMSO, and NO steroids are used in either the Equaide Solution or Equaide Pet Solution formulas.
Equaide Solution does not contain any banned or prohibited substances, making it safe for use in competition horses, including FEI and racing disciplines.
No, Equaide can be used with or without bandaging.
It is an excellent product for use on areas that are difficult or impossible to bandage. However, where possible, we do recommend bandaging wounds where proud flesh is present, as this can help speed up the healing process.
Bandaging can also help prevent the Equaide from being rubbed or brushed off.
For areas that are difficult to traditionally bandage, foam adhesive bandages can also be used to help keep the area clean and protected.
This is completely normal.
When cleaning the wound, not all of the residual Equaide may come away. Simply continue the usual process of giving the area a light clean, drying it thoroughly, and then applying another thin layer of Equaide over the top.
Equaide forms a protective layer over the wound, and any remaining product will naturally come away when it is ready to do so.
If Equaide starts to build up on the wound, you can gently soak the area with warm water to help encourage it to lift away. This can sometimes happen if the layer applied is a little too thick.
Please do not pick at the residual Equaide to remove it more quickly, as this may damage the healthy skin cells underneath and interfere with the healing process.
You may have noticed that we offer two options in our 2oz Equaide pots.
The Original Equaide Solution is designed for larger animals such as horses, donkeys, and cattle.
The Equaide Pet Solution is a lower-concentrated formula, making it ideal for smaller animals such as dogs, cats, chickens, and other household pets.
Both products are designed to support wound care, with the concentration adjusted to suit the intended animal type.
Yes, Equaide does have an expiry date; however, it has a long shelf life. You can view the current expiry dates for available stock within our product range.
If you have not used your pot of Equaide for a while and it has dried out, do not worry. Simply add a few drops of cooled sterile water, give it a good mix, and it will return to a usable consistency again.
This is a great way to refresh the product and help ensure none goes to waste.
Yes, Equaide is used and highly recommended by many vets throughout the UK.
